ETHIOPIA

Traveling within a timeless mosaic is Ethiopia

WHAT TO DO IN ETHIOPIA?

ADDIS ABEBA

Addis Ababa is a new city, capital however of an ancient country and a thousand-year civilization. The first European travelers, attracted by the echoes of the birth of a modern capital in the Horn of Africa, draw it, more than a city, as a huge camp full of shops and tukules, traditional huts.

GONDAR

Gondar is not a Historical-Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 1979 by chance. Already from the imposing Hotel Goha, with a Saint George between your fingers, you enjoy a unique set. The most striking attraction is the Fasil Ghebbi or Royal Enclosure. 70 thousand square meters including six castles, a complex of tunnels and other buildings. The castle of Fasilidas stands out, perfect combination of Portuguese, axumite and even Indian styles. But there is more. The castle of Iyasu (most elaborate construction), the castle of Bakafa or the still spooky lion cage.

LALIBELA

Lalibela is a miracle. A lost village in the highlands of northern Ethiopia is home to one of the most captivating architectural ensembles in the world: a dozen churches carved from living rock in unique blocks below ground level. But the amazing thing is not that, although it is hard to imagine the artists of the ancient empire of Aksum, back in the 7th century, chiseling tons of volcanic stone until monolithic cathedrals emerged in deep ditches.

ARBA MINCH

Arba Minch, a city in southern Ethiopia, is located about 500 km south of the capital, Addis Ababa. Its name, which in Amharic means “forty fountains”, is due to the numerous springs and underground water courses that flow through the neighboring forests. However, its fame is due mainly to its location. Located on a promontory, from Arma Minch you can see one of the most impressive and majestic landscapes of Ethiopia: the plains of Nechisar and the lakes Abaya and Chamo.

TURMI

Small population nucleus of another of the ethnies of the valley of the Omo, the Hammar. An ethnic group of great beauty, especially spectacular in women. Naked bodies, fully greased with a mixture of grease and red clay, give them a distinctive color, only covered with a small cowhide skirt, decorated with colored beads and depending on whether they are married or single women, they wear different necklaces to determine their status.

JIMA

Ethiopia is Jima with more than 200,000 inhabitants. This road covers the distance of more than 350 kilometers between these two cities in less than 6 hours.

The landscapes that we find on either side of the road do not stand out especially, but some of its places are: mud and straw houses, houses with corrugated roofs and ancient bridges that pierce the water courses.

MURELLE

Visit the territory of the Karos. Impressive the journey through the Hammer territory for the first time. First contact with the Savannah, its huge termite mounds and, above all, the Omo River. One of the cradles of humanity.
